“The 7 Psychological Reasons Why We Fail to Achieve Our Life Goals and How to Overcome Those Obstacles”

(Half-day—3 hours)

Description:

Oliver Wendell Holmes said, “Most people go to their grave with their song still within them.”  Are you “too busy earning a living to make your fortune?” “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve already got.” People don’t function optimally when they aren’t reaching their desired life ambitions. In this workshop the 7 basic reasons, according to research, why we get “stuck” are discussed.  Classic, common examples are provided.  Using the tenets of the four basic schools of psychology (Biological, Analytic, Cognitive and Behavioral), proven methods are offered to address obstacles and realize our life objectives.  The public and mental health clinicians can benefit from this program. This seminar is taken from Dr. Waldman’s fourth book—Too Busy Earning a Living to Make Your Fortune?  Discover the Psychology of Achieving Your Life Goals.

Learning Objectives:

1. List the 7 reasons we get and stay “stuck”

2. Differentiate the 4 schools of psychology

3. Provide a solution to each of the 7 obstacles, naming the school of thought utilized

“How to Raise a Responsible, Resilient Child”

(Half-day—3 hours)

The goal of most parents is to raise a responsible, caring, resilient young adult, yet parents receive no training in this most important process.  A child’s behavioral problems at home and in school creates stress for parents, especially mothers. If not corrected, the child may develop long-term educational and social dysfunction.  Behavior modification principles of reinforcement, intermittent reinforcement, extinction, and punishment are clearly—and humorously—outlined in this seminar.  Parents and clinicians will enjoy this presentation. Dr. Waldman’s first and second books serve as the basis for this program—Who’s Raising Whom? and Coping with Your Adolescent.

Learning Objectives:

1. List the six basic principles of effective parenting

2. Identify positive and negative parenting styles

3. Describe methods of increasing appropriate behavior and decreasing inappropriate behavior

“Thank you for presenting to our members. I enjoyed the presentation and plan to use the information within the community where I work.”

Hi Larry,

Well, I finally have received the evaluations for your workshop from the person who was compiling the data! Your numbers are outstanding! I’ve attached the summarized information for you.

Since your workshop I’ve heard so many wonderful reports from folks who attended. I’ve even had folks request that we bring you back for a second round! Then of course there were all the folks we had to turn away because the workshop sold out! They want you back because they didn’t get a chance to attend. So, we’ll have to keep that in mind for the future.

Speaking for myself, I learned so much from your workshop! And am glad I bought your extra books and CD’s. I’ve read the books and it was well worth every penny! I also had so much fun working with you! Your charming personality and wit made my crazy busy schedule more bearable because I knew I could take a break and come over and visit with you and your wife at your table for some light conversation.

In closing, thank you so much for bringing your workshop to the CCA here in Colorado. You’re information was absolutely valuable and well received. I do hope you know what a wonderful gift you bring to mental health practitioners! You’re absolutely right about it not being something they’re taught in graduate school and thank goodness there are folks like you out there to teach each. I do look forward to our paths crossing again in the future. Until then, take care my friend.

~ April Young, MFT, Ph.D., Past President, Colorado Psychological Association

“Marital Communication and Conflict Management”

(Half-day—3 hours)

The divorce rate in our country is a travesty, as about 45% of first marriages and 65% of second marriages fail.  Marital strife causes extreme stress and significantly interferes with employee efficiency.  One of the primary reasons for this tragic divorce rate is that couples are not trained to communicate properly and settle their differences amicably.  How to effectively send and receive messages, why second marriages are so fragile, and methods to “fight fair” are reviewed.  Couples and clinicians will appreciate this workshop. This seminar stems from Dr. Waldman’s third book—How Come I Love Him But Can’t Live with Him?

Learning Objectives:

1. List the best ways to send and receive a message to/from your partner

2. Define the reasons why second marriages fail at a high rate

3. Review the primary steps in “fighting fair”

Testimonial:

“Dear Larry,

What a great presentation!! Thanks so much for speaking at Marriage University. The class was so tuned into your presentation I am confident they left with many useful tools. As usual, your jokes put everyone at ease. You got their attention to understand the very important messages you convey.

It is always a joy to work with you. Thank you, again, for supporting this program and giving so much of your time to our community.

Best wishes and warm regards,”

~ Linda Feldman, Family Education Coordinator Phoenix Board of Jewish Education

“Effective Stress Management”

(Half-day—3 hours)

Unresolved stress is a silent killer.  If a top executive has a stress-related heart attack or stroke, the company could be in serious trouble.  Stress causes absenteeism and sub-par performance in many employees and general distress for most people.  Mark Twain said, “Stress is not what happens to you; stress is what you make of what happens to you.”  The following topics are addressed in this seminar:  types of stress, the effects of stress (Fight/Flight), and relevant behavioral, emotional and cognitive remedies.

Learning Objectives:

1. Define the types of stress we all face

2. Review the known physiological effects of Fight/Flight

3. Identify two stress relief remedies from the Behavioral and Cognitive perspectives

“Parenting Through Divorce”

(Half-Day—3 Hours)

Divorce turns the child’s world upside down and inside out. Their “perfect” parents (as far as the naïve child is concerned) no longer love each other and choose not to live together. For many unfortunate kids living in their parents’ bitter separation and divorce the rules of life have changed: Their once-perfect parents are enemies, often they are urged to pick sides—as if in a war, and their parents are now distracted and irritable.

Children caught in the meat grinder of an acrimonious divorce learn very quickly their lives can change on a dime, the world is a dangerous unpredictable place, they are powerless, and relationships are not permanent. These perceptions lay the groundwork for anxiety, even trauma, and mistrust, which clearly can have life-long consequences. This workshop is based on Dr. Waldman’s latest book—“Love Your Child More Than You Hate Your Ex: What Every Divorce Parent Needs to Know.”

Learning Objectives:

1. Describe how psychologically divorce appears to the child.

2. List the unfortunate “games” angry parents play—knowingly or not—which negatively affect kids.

3. Identify the steps divorcing and divorced parents can take to mitigate the harmful effects of divorce on their children.
